77.22 (Ce san li) & 77.23 (Ce xia san li)

Cesanli (77.22) is located 1.5 cun lateral to Zusanli (ST 36) and in between the ST and the GB meridians. It is important to understand that these points may affect the ST or GB meridian depending on the exact placement of the needle. This will be discussed more below. â€‹

Ce xia san li (77.23) is located 2 cun distal 77.22.

These two points should be needled together as a dao ma for best results.

Indications

Headaches, migraines, sinusitis, tootaches, facial paralysis, and abdominal pain. Note that all of these symptoms may be associated with the ST meridian, while headaches, migraines, and facial paralysis may also involve the GB meridian.

Intercostal pain and neuralgia. Costal pain is typically associated with LV/GB disharmony.

Discussion

These points are said to be located between the ST and GB meridians and their indications include disorders that may affect either of these channels.

Understanding the anatomy of the leg muscles in this area can help us to elucidate where to place these needles and how to use them for achieving the desired results. Anatomically, the extensor digitorum muscle is located between the stomach and gallbladder meridians. Additionally, ST 36 is located in the tibialis anterior muscle which is part of the myofasical chain known as the Superficial Front Line (SFL). The GB meridian transverses the peroneus longus muscles which is part of the lateral line (LL).

Depending on each persons anatomy, and the exact placement of the needles, it is possible to needle into either the extensor digitorum longus or the peroneus longus. If the desired result is to affect symptoms that are present in the ST channel, then place the needles in the extensor digitorum longus muscle. However, if the client has symptoms in the GB meridian or LL, then place the needles in the peroneus longus.
